  • Use the "lid" of your pumpkin as part of your design, attach with wooden peg.
  • Add fall leaves to your design.
  • To enhance your design, and to make it more suitable for Halloween, put Halloween novelties in it, like ghosts, spiders, cobwebs, or witches!

These tips apply to all fresh flowers as well. To learn how to care for roses, irises, tulips, Peruvian Lilies (Alstroemeria) and more, visit ProFlowers Flower Care page.

The Proflower Difference

What makes flowers from Proflower.com stand out? Proflowers sends you flowers straight from the field, which guarantees freshness. Other online florists send the orders to your local florists, who fills the order. The flowers there came from a wholesaler, and then have been sitting in the florists cooler for several days. Flowers ordered from your local florist or other online florists could be weeks old. Flowers from Proflowers will last longer.

While the flowers may last longer, there is one important thing to remember. Flowers that come straight from the field will most likely arrive in bud form. This means that the flowers or blossoms, will be closed and tight, and it will take a few days for them to open up. So it is important that you order the flowers a little bit early, and then take care to put them in warm water with the flower preservative that came with them. The combination of warm water and flower preservative will help the flowers open up and be in their most beautiful stage.

And as the flowers will come delivered in a box, they may need a little help being arranged. If you do ever happen to receive a flowers that aren't quite arranged, ProFlowers offers some helpful tips. This video shows you how to assemble your flowers in a vase.

The important things to remember are: remove outside petals on roses, cut the stems at an angle with a sharp knife or flower cutters, and add flower preservative to the water. The flower preservative is found in a small packet with the flowers. Removing the outside petals of roses is easy. They are tougher than the inside, and often times are a bit bruised or torn, so they are easily identifiable. Just gently pull them down and break them off.

Christmas Small Mug Floral Arrangement

A fun Christmas gift idea is to put a small fresh flower arrangement together in a holiday mug. Use wet floral foam as the base of the design. First cover the foam with leather leaf, none of the floral foam should be showing. Put a few taller pieces towards the back of the mug. Then fill in moving towards the front with smaller pieces of leather, creating a sort of fan shape. The arrangement can either be all the way around or one sided. If it is one sided, you still need to cover the floral foam in the back with the leather leaf.

When no floral foam is showing, begin adding the flowers. Start with three white carnations, all cut at different heights. then add a three white carnations. Use two stems of red pixie carnations. Cut each individual blossom from the stem and insert these in the floral foam around the design. Then add some baby's breath. Again, cut each sprig off the main stem so you have more to work with. Last add some red hypericum berries. You could also add some cedar or other evergreen to the design. Watch this step by step video for complete instructions. This small design is charming and will delight the receiver of such a gift.

Christmas Gift Basket with Fresh Flowers

Looking for the perfect Christmas present to give this year? A gift basket is fun and easy to put together. All you need to do is find a basket or a Christmas container and put a few things in it. Make it extra special and beautiful by adding a fresh flower. Some things that you could put in the gift basket in addition to a bud vase with a single flower, (such as a red Gerber daisy, rose, or lily), include: a Christmas movie, a Christmas book, Christmas tree ornaments, holiday cookie cutters, and/or treats. You could also do different themed gift baskets. For different themes you could use include: snowmen, gingerbread men/women, Santa Clause, the Nativity, Christmas trees, or Reindeer.

For a snowman themed basket, include a storybook about a snowman, snowman cookie cutters, and snowman shaped cookies and treats. Decorate the basket with blue and white tissue paper. Include a bud vase with a white flower accented with cedar or pine. Maybe also include snowman ornaments, candles, and/or figurines. A snowglobe would be perfect. Be creative! If you are having trouble filling up your gift basket, just go to a store that sells holiday decorations. The items are usually sorted by theme, so all you have to do is put the items you see in your basket.

To assemble the gift basket, first attach the bud vase in the container with floral clay. Then, if you use a wicker basket, use some festive Christmas tissue paper or other pretty paper to line it. Also, there are lots of square and rectangle wicker baskets available at craft and hobby stores that are lined with holiday cloth. Last arrange the gift items in the basket so it looks pretty and appealing. This would make a great gift for a coworker, teacher, sibling, or that person who just seems to have everything.

Christmas Flower Arrangement in a Crystal Vase

Make a small fresh flower arrangement in a holiday crystal container. Use roses and chrysanthemums, or other red and white flowers. A small arrangement like this will be ideal for a centerpiece for a small table or just as home holiday decor.

There are a few ways to assemble such an arrangement. One way is to create a dutch spiral hand bouquet, and then cut the stems very short so the rest just above the rim of the container. Another way to assemble the arrangement is, after cutting the stems short, to place the flowers in the container, in a criss-cross fashion to hold them in place. Don't forget to clean the stems from thorns and leaves. Any leaves in the water will rot.
