Traditional Rose Flower Arrangement

When it comes to Valentine's Day flowers or anniversary flowers, you can't go wrong with giving a traditional arrangement of a dozen red roses accented with baby's breath (gypsophilia). The following video gives step by step instructions on how to arrange a dozen roses in a vase.

This video uses red freedom roses, gypsophilia, tree fern (Asparagus), and leather leaf (Rumohra). You can obtain these supplies at your local florist. Grocery stores often have great floral departments where you can also buy these supplies individually.

The cheapest place to buy a glass floral vase is at a thrift store. If you can't find what you're looking for there, try the floral department at your local grocery store, they usually have the best selection this time of year. Another way to obtain nice floral vases is to order flowers online, and include a vase in your order or go to your local florist. Of course, if you have an account with a flower wholesaler, you can also get great deals on vases from them as well.

Proflowers.com often offers a free vase with your order:

Christmas Small Mug Floral Arrangement

A fun Christmas gift idea is to put a small fresh flower arrangement together in a holiday mug. Use wet floral foam as the base of the design. First cover the foam with leather leaf, none of the floral foam should be showing. Put a few taller pieces towards the back of the mug. Then fill in moving towards the front with smaller pieces of leather, creating a sort of fan shape. The arrangement can either be all the way around or one sided. If it is one sided, you still need to cover the floral foam in the back with the leather leaf.

When no floral foam is showing, begin adding the flowers. Start with three white carnations, all cut at different heights. then add a three white carnations. Use two stems of red pixie carnations. Cut each individual blossom from the stem and insert these in the floral foam around the design. Then add some baby's breath. Again, cut each sprig off the main stem so you have more to work with. Last add some red hypericum berries. You could also add some cedar or other evergreen to the design. Watch this step by step video for complete instructions. This small design is charming and will delight the receiver of such a gift.

Christmas Candle Ring

A candle ring is a very popular floral design piece for the Christmas holidays. A candle ring can be made of several types of greens. Traditionally evergreen, such as pine, is used. But, using a green such as boxwood can be very beautiful. It can be filled out with berries and holly and accented with pine cones. Traditionally a round candle is placed in the center around the ring of evergreen. The candle can either stand alone or be covered with a hurricane glass vase. Of course you can either purchase an artificial candle ring, or purchase a fresh one online, if you do not have time to make one yourself.

Flower Arrangement Ideas for Christmas Gifts

Flowers are a unique and special gift to give for Christmas. There are a variety of floral arrangements available to purchase online, or you can make one yourself. Here are a few ideas: a Christmas centerpiece, small arrangement in a holiday mug or decorative container, gift basket, candle ring, and vase arrangements.

A gift basket is fun to put together and even more fun to give. All you need to do is find a basket or a Christmas container and put a few things in it. This would make a great gift for a coworker, teacher, sibling, or that person who just seems to have everything.

Another fun idea is to put a small arrangement together in a holiday mug. Use floral foam as the base of the design. This small design is charming and will delight the receiver of such a gift.

You could create an arrangement for any size vase, the larger the vase, the more flowers and greens to use. For Christmas time, use red, white and maybe even green flowers (like green button mums). Also choose from a variety of greens and evergreens. Accent a red rose in a bud vase with some baby’s breath and cedar. Deep red alstroemeria are especially beautiful. There are many other fresh flowers that would be perfect to use for Christmas arrangements.

A Christmas centerpiece can be made in several ways. You can either create a simple centerpiece of an arrangement of flowers in a low crystal container or make a long centerpiece in a plastic centerpiece tray with a variety of evergreens. Any of these designs would be perfect to give a friend or family member as a gift or to keep yourself and decorate your home with.

Christmas Flower Arrangement in a Crystal Vase

Make a small fresh flower arrangement in a holiday crystal container. Use roses and chrysanthemums, or other red and white flowers. A small arrangement like this will be ideal for a centerpiece for a small table or just as home holiday decor.

There are a few ways to assemble such an arrangement. One way is to create a dutch spiral hand bouquet, and then cut the stems very short so the rest just above the rim of the container. Another way to assemble the arrangement is, after cutting the stems short, to place the flowers in the container, in a criss-cross fashion to hold them in place. Don't forget to clean the stems from thorns and leaves. Any leaves in the water will rot.

Flowers in a Christmas Mug Video

Thanksgiving Centerpiece! How to make a Fresh Flower Arrangement

Centerpieces are in high demand during the Thanksgiving holiday. Any centerpiece will add to your Thanksgiving dinner table. A centerpiece made with fresh flowers is sure to delight all your Thanksgiving visitors. It can also serve as a great gift to the host or hostess of your Thanksgiving dinner. A wide variety of Thanksgiving centerpieces can be ordered online, or you can create your own. Here are the basic instructions you will need to make your own centerpiece.

The supplies needed include, plastic centerpiece tray, floral foam, two tapered candles, two candle cups, wired wooden pegs, small pumpkin picks (or two small squash that can be anchored with the wooden pegs), and pine cones. These supplies can be found at just about any craft and floral store or online. The foliage you will need includes; seeded eucalyptus, husk, nandina, galax, and dried oak leaves. The flowers are red and yellow roses, yellow and red spray roses, and orange and red cushion mums. For this design you will need about six total roses, 3 stems of spray roses, and three stems of cushion mums. You may also want to use hypericum berries.

While these are the flowers and foliage suggested for this design there are many other options available. Some different kinds of foliage would be; spiral eucalyptus, salal, boxwood, and myrtle. Other great flowers to use include, carnations (which last a long time), pixie carnations, daisy mums, spider mums, lilies, and alstroemeria. Some other filler flowers would be; waxflower, statice, solidage, and button mums.

First you will need to cut your floral foam to fit in the centerpiece tray. Next you will need to soak it in floral foam. After you have your wet floral foam in place and before you begin adding the foliage to the design, insert the candle cups in the middle of the floral foam and place the candles inside. Now add the foliage. You want all the floral foam to be covered before you begin putting in the flowers and accessories. Start with the oak leaves on the bottom, then the seeded eucalyptus, longer pieces of husk and then the galax leaves. You will want to cut off the small branches on your stems so they are the right size for the centerpiece. Don't be afraid to let the design get a little big.

Once the foliage is in place, you can begin to add the flowers. There are several different ways to arrange the flowers. Once is to spread similar flowers evenly around the design. Another way is to group similar flowers. I suggest a little of both. You can do the same thing with the different colors of the flowers. Now you can start adding the pine cones and the hypericum berries. In addition to the hypericum berries, the taller pieces of seeded eucalyptus are great for putting in the gaps left between the flowers, if there are any. Following these basic steps, you will have a beautiful Thanksgiving centerpiece in no time.

National Boss Day

National Boss Day
is October 16. Does this sound like just another excuse to buy flowers, it probably is. If you want to thank your boss for the great job you have, National Boss Day is a good day to do it. It's a great day to take in an arrangement of flowers or a plant to the office. What's even more fun about National Boss Day, is I don't think a lot of people know about it so it will surprise them.

Patricia Haroski, a secretary, established this holiday because she wanted to officially express appreciation for her boss.
